State withdraws local cheese

On June 16, the California Department of Food and Agriculture issued a hold on all of Petaluma-based Spring Hill Cheese's Jersey Jack cheese, and ordered a withdrawal of all 8-pound wheels and wedges of the same brand from retail distribution due to detection of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

The bacteria were detected by the Food and Drug Administration investigators as a result of routine surveillance and laboratory sampling at the Spring Hill Cheese manufacturing plant.

The withdrawal order involves removal of approximately 500 pounds of Jersey Jack cheese from grocery and retail outlets in Northern and Central California. The company's other products are not affected by the order. No illnesses have been reported to date. For more information, call the company at 762-3446.

New doggie dude ranch

Dairydell's City Lickers Doggie Daycare and Dude Ranch will host a grand opening on July 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. at 2575 Adobe Road.

Visitors are invited to tour the new daycare facility on the former working dairy ranch. The event will have a chuckwagon grill and western-style entertainment, with demonstrations and prizes such as discounted daycare packages and free training consultations.

City Lickers is an expansion of services by the Dairydell Finishing School for Dogs, run by owner and trainer Camilla Gray Nelson.

WSJ likes Laloo's Vanilla

A June 22 article in The Wall Street Journal stated that the Vanilla Snowflake flavor from Petaluma-based Laloo's Goat's Milk Ice Cream won the Journal's taste test over Ben & Jerry's Vanilla and Haagen-Dazs Light Vanilla Bean.
