Fire calls

June 21, 2006

The Petaluma Fire Department received 61 medical calls and 40 fire or other emergency calls from June 12 to 18. These are some of the incidents the department responded to.

THURSDAY, JUNE 15

4:31 a.m. -- A fire destroyed a storage building and trailer behind Tresch and Silva's Appliances at 402 Petaluma Blvd. North. Firefighters from the Petaluma, Rancho Adobe, Wilmar and Lakeville departments responded. They weren't able to battle the fire from inside the building and trailer, but brought it under control from outside in 22 minutes. The building, trailer and its contents, and old appliance parts, were destroyed. No damage estimate was made, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

SATURDAY, JUNE 17

12:37 a.m. -- Heavy fire was coming from the garage and side of a single-story home at 1629 Del Oro Circle. Petaluma and Rancho Adobe crews extinguished the fire, which caused an estimated $200,000 in structural damages and $40,000 in contents damages.

12:09 p.m. -- Fire units responded to 1726 Capella Court, but found that the owner of the home there already had used a portable extinguisher to put out a fire in the laundry room, off the garage. After disassembling the dryer, firefighters found a heavy accumulation of lint near the heating element.

9:30 p.m. -- Fire units responded to 222 Fourth St., and found that heavy fire and smoke was coming from a second-story window of a large, two-story Victorian that is divided into six apartments. They saw a resident, Jim Nason, dragging another occupant toward them. The victim, who had burns on his face and chest, as well as a damaged airway from the superheated smoke, was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The fire, which most likely was caused when cooking material was left unattended on a stove, was extinguished with the help of Rancho Adobe, Coast Guard, Novato and Lakeville fire units. Structural damages were estimated at $125,000 and contents damages were roughly $50,000.
